Apple will spring the next-gen iPad before the year’s end, a Chinese business daily reports, as it looks to see off the slew of Android slates competing for consumers’ hard-earned buck.
According to a Reuters report citing a separate story from Economic Daily News (EDN), Apple will bring the iPad 3 to market during the fourth quarter – just in time for the Christmas spending spree.
The original EDN report also claims that the third iPad will be home to a screen with a resolution between five and six times higher than Apple’s current-gen tablet wonder.
A fourth-quarter launch date would mean the slate could follow hard on the heels of the iPhone 5, which most analysts now expect to arrive around September.
It’s thought that the rationale behind the move is that a third-gen iPad would leave current-gen Android kit standing and extend Apple’s lead in the nascent tablet market.
However, given that iPad 2 is reportedly on track to do eight million units during Q3 while the Gingerbread powered Moto Xoom has reportedly stalled at around 100,000, how much Apple needs a newer slate to continue its dominance is a moot point.
