Android Gmail app gets priority sync, custom notifications

Building on its recent update of Maps, Google has revamped its Gmail application for Android with a number of new features and improvements.

Version 2.3.5 enables users to individually select the mailboxes they wish to sync automatically, such as the priority inbox and any custom labels they have created for important missives, allowing the battery drain caused by the sync function to be significantly reduced.

Moreover, users can set custom notifications for individual labels, such as a ringtone and vibration, making it easier to be alerted to mail that may be more urgent than others. However, if you’re annoyed by repeated notifications, an option to only notify you on the first email received is also on board.

The settings menu has been split into general preferences, which comes with new options for message actions, such as the ability to always show them in portrait or landscape orientation.

And at long last, messages with images, which previously required you to individually press a button on each email to display, now contain an additional button to always display images from a particular sender, just like on the browser.

Other additions include performance enhancements and all-round smoother reading experience.
