The iPhone will fight it out with five Androids kits for T3’s smartphone of the year award, it has been confirmed, in a ceremony dominated by Apple and Google.
Cupertino’s iPhone 4 faces challenges from the record-breaking Samsung Galaxy S2, Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, HTC Sensation, HTC Incredible S and – a surprise inclusion this – the Motorola Atrix to be named the year’s best high-end blower.
And it’s Android that’ll presumably pose the biggest threat to Apple in the tablet of the year category too, where the iPad 2 is doing battle with the Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 and LG Optimus Pad.
Rival platforms do get a look in this time around, though, in the shape of Research in Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook and the tablet-cum-lappy hybrid, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer.
The ‘Big Two’ tenor of those categories is reflected in the rest of the nominations, with Jobs and co accounting for 15 finalists, while Google and Android notch 18.
Elsewhere, the Gadget Personality of the Year includes all the big hitters. Think: His Royal Fryness, Gadget Show gals Suzi Perry and Polyanna Woodward and pal Jason Bradbury.
But there’s still room for less predictable inclusions too. Not least Hip-Hop auteur and ace beat-mangler Dr Dre and Lady Gaga – both of whom make the cut largely for their ace high-end ear buds.
