Samsung asks for Apple lawyers to be disqualified

Samsung is seeking a court order to exclude the lawyers Apple has hired to fight its case in an ongoing legal spat over alleged copying of each other’s products.

The Korean electronics giant claims that at least five lawyers representing Apple from patent litigation firm Bridges & Mavrakakis – including founder Kenneth Bridges – should be disqualified as they have previously worked for Samsung in similar cases. Samsung argues that the firm has inside information that potentially “taints all attorneys at Bridges & Mavrakakis by imputation".

In its motion, Samsung states: "It is inevitable that Samsung's confidential information ... will be used to advance Apple's interests against Samsung in this litigation."

The extent of intelligence the firm is privy to is not mentioned, but if there is a chance that it compromises the fairness of the proceedings, Seoul could very well have its way.

The legal tug-of-war between the companies begun when Cupertino accused Samsung of ripping off the design and technology of its iProducts for the Galaxy smartphone and tablet range. Apple has since won a court order for its lawyers to inspect various Galaxy prototypes for any patent violations. However, Samsung has vowed to defend its innocence and is counter suing Apple on the same grounds.

The case continues.
