Android apps coming to BlackBerry phones?

The next-generation of BlackBerry smartphones could run Android applications, reports suggest, as manufacturer Research In Motion (RIM) looks to boost its phones’ appeal beyond its core market.

According to insider sources familiar with matters at the Canada-based phone maker cited by Bloomberg, the move is intended to entice jaded customers who have “grown weary of the aging BlackBerry portfolio and its narrower selection of apps” compared with Android and the iPhone.

Compatibilty with the raft of tidy titles on offer at the Android Market will be introduced with the first BlackBerry phones powered by its QNX operating system, which is currently solely used for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

These are expected to land in early 2012, meaning that would-be QNX BlackBerry phone buyers could have an impressively vast library of some 250,000 apps on offer from day one.

The already-confirmed plan to bring Android app support to the PlayBook via the addition of the Android app player is reportedly scheduled for later this year, Bloomberg’s sources added.
