Images and specifications for what is claimed to be the first-ever QNX-powered BlackBerry phone have cropped up online, just days after the first phones running its BlackBerry 7 (BB7) operating system were unveiled to a lukewarm reception from tech watchers.

Unearthed by Boy Genius Report (BGR), the handset, provisionally titled the Colt, runs the QNX operating system that debuted on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet that landed earlier this year.

The snaps reveal that the device will sport all the hallmarks of Research In Motion’s (RIM) BlackBerry phones, with the trad-dad physical keyboard and a trackpad for navigation.

According to BGR, the phone is likely to feature a single core processor, meaning it’d likely be somewhat slower than the lickety-split Android kits currently setting the pace in the smartphone race.

The appearance of the first QNX contender comes after RIM last week showcased five new handsets, including new additions to the Bold and Torch range.

QNX, which RIM always planned to transfer to smartphones, is a radical departure from BB7 and introduces a new user interface whereby apps that are in use are represented as thumbnails and can be flicked across the screen.

The Colt is expected to land in the UK during the second quarter of 2012.
