HTC has announced that its official bootloader unlock tool is now available in Europe for the HTC Sensation.
The Taiwanese phone-maker confirmed the news on its Facebook page, staying true to its word that a web based tool to facilitate the unlock process would be available before the end of the month.
HTC said: “We are very excited that our bootloader unlock process is now available for our first phone! Currently, HTC Sensation (EU) running software version 1.45.401.2 can use the new unlock process.
"Other devices will be added in the future, so please check HTCDev.com often for updates, as well as a detailed explanation of the unlock process.”
For the uninitiated, a bootloader is the piece of software that brings the operating system to memory – or in simpler terms, the stuff that turns it on. In a locked state, as was the case with the HTC Evo 3D, it prevents users from installing custom ROMs (standalone versions of Android that have been customised in some way).
This resulted in a torrent of protest from HTC fans and forced the company to agree to provide a way for users who wish to brave the risks to be able to unlock the bootloader on their handsets from hereon.
Well, if you own a Sensation and live in Europe, you’re in luck and will be the first to benefit. However, beware of HTC’s warning that “not all claims resulting or caused by or from the unlocking of the bootloader may be covered under warranty” and the process should therefore be only undertaken if you understand the risks involved.
We also strongly advise that you back-up all your important data before attempting to use the unlock tool.
