The UK’s first-ever, glasses-free 3D-capable smartphone is available now on Orange, teaming 3D video playback and recording with high-end Android phone functionality.
Orange is offering the handset free from £40 per month when takers sign up to a 24-month contract. That’ll get you 900 call minutes, unlimited texts and 750MB of data usage per month, as well as unlimited Wi-Fi at BT OpenZone hotspots.
Nicola Shenton, Head of Device Portfolio, Everything Everywhere said: “The LG Optimus 3D is truly a game changer in the smartphone market, and we are delighted to be able to give our customers the opportunity to dive into the exciting world of 3D.
“The way we create, share and view content is constantly evolving, and we’re proud to be at the cutting edge of innovation by offering smartphones and handsets which give users more options than ever before.”
Currently being showcased at LG events around the UK, the Optimus 3D enables users to record and view 3D content on the 4.3-inch WVGA display. As well as 3D movies for download, there’s also a library of user-generated content to view via YouTube’s dedicated 3D channel.
Elsewhere, it’s home to dual, five-megapixel stereoscopic cameras, 8GB of storage and a dual core processor to keep everything running super smoothly.
Alas, the Optimus 3D ships with the ageing Froyo version of Android out of the box. However, LG has promised us an upgrade to the newer Gingerbread iteration of the platform from around late September. And in a development that considering sweetens the appeal of LG’s challenger, the update will bring with it the option to convert 2D HD games to 3D.
