iPhone 5 in production, partners waiting on iOS 5

Apple’s manufacturing partners have begun making the iPhone 5, it has been claimed, adding further weight to speculation said device will launch either mid or late October.

According to a Chinese source cited by Japanese Mac site Macotakara, whose report was picked up by Apple Insider for us in the West to digest, Foxconn and Pegatron’s China-based factories have started assembling the handset.

However, in news that might surprise some given that Apple unveiled the software the phones will run on way back in June, both companies have been instructed not to package up the handsets for the time being because Apple isn’t ready just yet to install iOS 5 on them.

News of movement in Apple’s supply chain comes amid speculation that the fifth-generation iPhone will actually land in stores on October 21st. The mooted date stems from leaked information from retailer BestBuy, who it seems are readying stores in anticipation of the launch.

Mooted specs for the handset, which is rumoured to be a slimmer, lighter bit of kit all round, include an eight-megapixel camera (the iPhone 4 packs a relatively puny five-megapixel number), a four-inch screen, 4G support in selected territories and possibly even improved voice control smarts.
