Google officially launched a new movie rental service for Android powered smartphones and tablets in the UK.

The new Movies section is currently accessible on the Android Market on Android devices or computers and boasts around 1,000 new and old films spanning a variety of genres.

Prices start from £2.49, with current top rentals including the likes of Five Five and Senna. Once a title is rented, it is available for 30 days and must be watched within 48 hours.

Movies are categorised by Featured and New Releases, with a library of several Hollywood blockbusters to choose from such as The Dark Knight and 300, as well as classics such as The Wizard of Oz and Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life.

Only time will tell whether Movies will be able to stack up against Apple’s iTunes and Sony’s newly announced Entertainment Network. Google is also due to launch a Music service, which is currently in beta in the US.
