Networks, retailers and mobile manufacturers won big at the uSwitch Mobile Awards 2011 last night, bagging multiple gongs for their achievements in the mobile industry this past year.
In the People’s Choice awards, where thousands of punters were quizzed for their opinions on the year’s best industry players, O2 and T-Mobile emerged triumphant by winning in all five categories.
O2 scooped awards for Best Network Coverage and Customer Support, while T-Mobile picked up Best Network For Roaming and Best Value for both Pay As You Go and Monthly as customers praised the carrier’s efforts in offering an array of affordable tariffs.
Manufacturers weren’t far behind, with Apple and HTC scooping awards in five out of six categories. HTC won Best for Camera and Best Use of Android, beating out Samsung and Sony Ericsson. Apple on the other hand won Best For Internet, Ease of Use and Design in a clear sign of consumers’ opinion of the iPhone as a cut above the rest.
In the Judges’ Choice awards, where uSwitch.com asked a panel of industry experts and technology journalists for their verdicts, Carphone Warehouse won Best High Street Retailer, for stealing a march on competitors on exclusive deals on several occasions, while Mobiles.co.uk was awarded Best Online Retailer for its easy to use interface and range of deals.
Three won the highly coveted award for Best Network, thanks to its innovative approach to deals and improvements in coverage. Samsung staved off challenges from Apple and HTC for Best Manufacturer, with its Galaxy S2 announced the year’s Best Handset.
Ernest Doku, communications expert at uSwitch.com, said: “Customers can see beyond gimmicks. A flash camera, for example, is useless if it’s not easy to access and easy to use. And good network coverage and value for money should go hand in hand, rather than consumers having to compromise.
“Companies that offer exciting handsets, low-cost tariffs, excellent customer service and user-friendly websites are getting it right, as are those that reward their loyal customers with perks and freebies, rather than focusing all their attentions on new sign ups.”
