iPhone 4S stocks withheld by Apple until iOS 5 battery fix arrives?

The recently uncovered iPhone 4S’s battery problems could be behind widespread stock shortages of Apple’s latest blower, chatter on Twitter suggests.

Issues with the handset’s battery longevity emerged this week, prompting Apple to issue an official statement that a fix is on the way in the form of an iOS 5 software update that should be with us in a “few weeks time”.

The problem with the phone, which echoes last year’s damaging iPhone 4 Antennagate reception glitches, comes at a time when huge demand means many customers face lengthy waits to get hold of the iPhone 4S.

Concurrently, today on Twitter it appears to have emerged that Apple could be deliberately holding on to stocks that are intended for partner networks and retail outlets, presumably while the issue is ironed out.

According to La Rainbow, O2 staff at the Stevenage branch have informed her that “Apple is delaying deliveries” and that as a result the network’s South East stores have no new iPhone 4S kits to sell.

In response, it's notable that O2 wouldn't commit one way or another to their follower's entreaty, revealing only that it is working to get stock out to customers as soon as it can.

News that Apple is taking action to avert potential PR-mageddon with its handset’s battery comes after it loudly trumpeted the iPhone 4S’s supposedly improved battery life at its launch event.
