Two of the biggest selling Android smartphones are among the most vulnerable to viruses on the market, a security company has claimed.

In a list of the most at-risk handsets conducted by Bit9, all 12 entries are taken by Android smarties.

And worryingly for the millions of owners out there, the company claims that the HTC Desire is the second-most susceptible to malware – beaten to the ignominious top spot only by the Samsung Galaxy Ace.

And there’s another appearance for Samsung at position eight, this time for its one-time flagship kit, the Galaxy S. Rival phone-makers don’t get off the hook either, with the LG Optimus S, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and a couple of Motorola Droid-branded kits also present and correct.

Bit9 attributes the problem to manufacturers failing to update their handsets’ operating systems once holes are discovered, as well as the likes of HTC being tardy with pushing them out.

This has been exacerbated by phone-makers’ failure to foresee the hardware requirements necessitated by future versions of their handsets’ software, resulting in debacles such as the HTC Desire Android 2.3 Gingerbread update farrago.
