Samsung Galaxy S2 Android Ice Cream Sandwich update inbound December

Samsung Galaxy S2 owners will taste the Ice Cream Sandwich as early as next month, an Android insider claims.

The shadowy tipster who was quizzed by the LA Gadgets Examiner at an Android event last week for an ETA on the latest version of the Android operating system for the HTC EVO 3D, revealed it should be rolled out sometime next month, going onto add “the same with the Galaxy S2 on all carriers”.

We’ve previously heard from another source that Ice Cream Sandwich for Samsung’s best-selling Android will likely be pushed out in January next year. Samsung’s Italian wing also recently spilled the beans that the software bump will be ready in Q2 2012. However, the prospect of having it sooner will no doubt excite some ten million fans that took the plunge.

Standout features that Google latest, tastiest OS refresh brings to the platform include a revamped UI, a new screen unlock mechanism that utilises face detection technology and an enhanced multitasking interface that offers a webOS-style swipe-to-close gesture to terminate running apps.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus will be first device to market to run Ice Cream Sandwich when it hits store shelves on November 17th. An update will then be released to other manufacturers to customise with their own bespoke UIs. As these take time to test, it’s likely the update in December will probably be only for owners of the unlocked version of the Samsung Galaxy S2.

Keep 'em peeled for more Ice Cream Sandwich news and announcements in the weeks to come. You can also follow us on Twitter or find us on Facebook for the latest updates.
