Siri, Apple’s killer app for the iPhone 4S, experienced a minor blackout yesterday, piling on the PR pain for Cupertino following complaints of the handset suffering severe battery issues.
Servers that run the intelligent voice-guided personal assistant were unavailable for several hours, reasons for which have yet to come to surface. Fortunately, the outage appeared to be limited to only in the US. However, considering it’s the only country where Siri can even be used to its full extent, it leaves yet another question looming over its reliability in times of need.
In Apple’s defense, the problem was fairly quickly resolved and it did make clear that that Siri is still in beta and so problems are to be expected. Our only gripe is that users outside the US are not able to use the app for local search and maps yet. Until that materialises, it might be best to hold back judgment on Siri’s actual usefulness.
