The rumoured Apple press call this month will focus on improvements to iBookstore as the company looks to see off the challenge of the Amazon Kindle Fire, according to an insider familiar with events down in Cupertino.
A source cited by TechCrunch claims the New York event will be centred on books and magazine publishing, flying in the face of previous suggestions that we were due some maj-ah announcements related to Apple TV or even an iOS update for the iPad.
Details of exactly what enhancements to iBookstore might be on the way remain sketchy. But we’re rather taken with TechCrunch’s theory that we could see the arrival of textbooks.
Apple has keenly touted the educational credentials of its tablet from day one. And schools and libraries have been quick to embrace the wonderslate too, not least because of its potential cost savings ebooks offer over hard copies.
In other Cupertino-related news, the third generation iPad is expected later this year. Last week, images leaked online that apparently confirmed long-standing speculation that it would sport a high-density retina screen.
