Samsung Galaxy Nexus refresh with faster processor may be inbound

Samsung may be working on an improved version of the Galaxy Nexus, after a benchmark test for the handset sporting a new graphics processor was spotted on NenaMark.

Unearthed by Droid-Life, the handset is question features a PowerVR SGX 544 GPU from Imagination Technologies, which is actually used in Texas Instrument’s new OMAP4470 processor, rather than the OMAP4460 chipset that comes with the original Galaxy Nexus and is paired with Sammy’s own SGX540 GPU.

A bit strangely perhaps, the CPU, if it’s indeed the 4470, appears to be underclocked to 1.3GHz from the 1.8GHz brawn it’s capable of.

Samsung has already announced a supercharged version of its original Galaxy S smartie, the Galaxy S Advance, which packs a dual core processor. It also released a more powerful version of the Galaxy S2. So it’s not entirely beyond the realms of possibility that a more souped up model of the Galaxy Nexus may also be in the works.

Of course it’s also quite possible the results have been ‘spoofed’, as the folk over at Android and Me put it. However, the presence of a totally different GPU, and the fact it currently tops all the scores for the Galaxy Nexus so far, suggests something may be definitely afoot.

Rumours are also doing the rounds that the revamped edition will come with an eight-megapixel camera following criticism of the five-megapixel snapper in the current model.

Whatever the case, we’ll likely find out more closer to next month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Stay tuned for our full coverage in the weeks to come.
