As if it wasn’t already a massive hit with mass-market punters and tech sages alike, Samsung’s best-selling Android kit, the Galaxy S2, has been named ‘Best Smartphone’ at the Global Mobile Awards at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC).
The Galaxy S2 beat Apple’s iPhone 4S to nab the gong, while Samsung was crowned Best Manufacturer, despite being absent at the event.
GSMA, in case you were unaware, is an association of mobile operators devoted to the advancement of the GSM standard. The awards are held annually to promote and celebrate the success of the industry.
“The 2012 Global Mobile Awards continue to showcase the greatest, most creative and innovative products and services driving the mobile ecosystem today and into the future,” said Michael O’Hara, Chief Marketing Officer at GSMA.
“The GSMA congratulates winners and commends all those taking part for raising the benchmark of contributions to mobile communications across the entire industry.”
Apple did not completely lose out, though. The iPad 2 won Best Tablet, a testament to its supremacy on the slates market despite Android’s dominance on the smartphones front.
The Cupertino-based giant is expected to unveil the third-generation iPad on March 7th. Samsung will show its hand at its own event in the near future to announce the hotly awaited successor to the Galaxy S2.
Keep ‘em peeled for news and updates from MWC in the days to come.
