Rumours that the next-gen iPhone could be 3D-capable got fresh legs today, after a patent for the technology was discovered by a keen-eyed Apple fansite.

The filing, which was unearthed by the punning sorts at Patently Apple, displays two snappers and what are described as "depth-detection sensors”.

These would purportedly combine to function comparably to radar, and along with luminance sensors, would be capable of more vibrant, more convincing 3D snaps and video than currently available.

Apple’s tech could also be used to create 3D mock-ups of objects captured as still images, which users would be able to rotate to see the complete picture.

News of Apple’s plans comes after the most recent crop of 3D phones failed to match sales expectations, seemingly confirming the suspicions of those who claimed the tech was a mere fad.

Both the HTC Evo 3D and LG Optimus 3D were heavily discounted within months of landing last year.
