The Samsung Galaxy S3’s voice commands app has named an arch rival’s smartphone as the world’s best, in the second such PR meltdown in recent weeks.
Asked ‘what is the best smartphone?’ by the wags at The Inquirer, S-Voice identified said handset as the HTC 7 Trophy – a Windows-powered blower whose weak sales had suggested it was of niche appeal only.
S-Voice, which uses US retailer Best Buy’s chart of best-rated phones as the basis of its answer, also recommended the iPhone 4S and the Nokia Lumia 900 as kits worthy of your smartphone buck.
The shame felt by Sammy over S-Voice’s clanger is mitigated somewhat by the fact that Apple’s Siri digital assistant was also recently found to recommend a competitor’s phone when asked the same question. In that case, it was the Lumia 900 that got the nod.
Whether Samsung will follow the lead of Apple and massage the results its app returns in future remains to be seen. But we definitely wouldn’t bet against it.
