Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) could still land on the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, after a fresh new firmware update for the handset cropped up on certification site PTCRB.
Last month Sony announced that the Play will not receive an upgrade to the latest OS iteration due to memory constraints that it says would have ‘compromised stability’ for the PlayStation Certified phone.
So we were pretty surprised when PTCRB approved a new software version for the R800i – aka Xperia Play – titled '4.1.B.0.431’ and dated June 15th, which suggests an upgrade is not a non-starter just yet.
The cynic in us thinks Sony may have decided to scrap the update while it was still being tested by PTCRB. However, a more optimistic explanation may be that the phone-maker requested an embargo on the listing until the above date.
Whatever the case, we won’t find out for sure until an official announcement is forthcoming. We’ll be getting in touch with Sony for more gen and let you know what we find out. So keep ‘em peeled.
