Google updates Search iOS app with Siri-like voice search

Google has finally released the latest version of its official Search app for iOS, bringing improved voice search functionality to take on Apple’s Siri.

The updated app was due to land back in August but was apparently rejected by Apple for reasons as yet unknown. Well, it’s here now and it does, almost, live up to expectations.

Google Search vs Siri iPad weather query

As with Siri, you can make queries about the weather, find nearby restaurants and check out the latest sports results. You can also ask it to play the trailer for Iron Man 3 and it will do just that. The voice recognition is certainly on par with Siri. What’s cool is that you can see your query being displayed on the screen as you speak the words, allowing you to make corrections more quickly.

The interface is clearly inspired by Google Now for Android and looks great. Alas, there no cards to keep you updated with information specific to you and most queries are still presented in the form of your standard search results. Still, this is a natty update that’s sure to please Google and Apple fans alike.

Google Search is free to download right now for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad from the App Store.
