Scott Forstall falls on sword after iOS Apple Maps debacle

Scott Forstall, head of software for iPhones and iPads at Apple, is leaving the company, amid eviscerating criticism of the mapping solution he oversaw.

The man once seen as the natural successor to Steve Jobs is departing his role as senior vice president of iOS next year, an announcement from the Cupertino-based tech giant confirmed.

The many shortcomings of the Apple Maps software, including entire towns missing from maps and misspelt place names (which we’ve handily itemised here), are thought to have contributed to the move.

These were deemed so severe that CEO Tim Cook was forced to apologise, prompting tech watchers to evoke memories of the antennagate debacle with iPhone 4.

Forstall’s departure is also thought to be related to tension with Apple’s hardware designer Jonathan Ive, whose minimalist aesthetic jars with the iOS head honcho’s weakness for cutesy, skeuomorphic touches such as notebook apps that take on the form of a traditional notebook.

Apple also announced John Browett, who joined six months ago from Dixons to manage the company’s retail arm, has left the company, after a drive to cut staffing levels proved unpopular with the Apple Store rank and file.
