iPhone 5 Wi-Fi ‘grey out’ glitch reported after iOS 6.0.1 update

Nagging Wi-Fi annoyances continue to frustrate iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners, despite a recent iOS update that was meant to fix the problem once and for all.

Complaints about a bizarre glitch that apparently causes the Wi-Fi toggle in Settings (and the Bluetooth toggle, too, in some cases) to be “greyed out” or go dim, preventing users from turning it on or off, are pouring in just days after Apple rolled out the latest iOS 6.0.1 update to address a number of issues with the iPhone 5 connecting to wireless networks.

Although the exact cause of the problem has yet to be uncovered, one prevalent theory is that the Wi-Fi radio may have failed or is overheating, causing it to shut down.

Apple has already acknowledged the issue and posted an official suggestion that might reverse the symptoms.

If you encounter this issue, try the following steps and attempt to enable Wi-Fi or Bluetooth after each one.

  1. Verify that Airplane Mode is off.

  2. Restart your iOS device

  3. Update your iOS device

  4. Reset Network Settings, by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings

  5. Restore your iOS device in iTunes.
