Twitter has updated its official app for iOS and Android with hipster photo filters and other editing tools, as it bids to take on Facebook-owned rival Instagram.
Available today, the update brings eight rather unimaginatively titled filters: Vignette, Black & White, Warm, Cool, Vintage, Cinematic, Happy and Gritty, created by photo-editing outfit Aviary. It also adds the ability to scale and crop images and an auto-enhance function that jazzes up your snap at the tap of a button.
Instagram has already retaliated by updating its app with several enhancements of its own, including a new filter called ‘Willow’, integration with Foursquare, improved tilt-shift and infinite scrolling on user profiles.
The micro-blogging and photo-sharing giants have locked horns in an intensifying rivalry that saw Instagram remove support for Twitter cards, which allowed users to view Instagram photos right in their stream. Twitter, meanwhile, had previously disabled Instagram users’ ability to find/add friends on Twitter.
While it makes perfect sense for Twitter to provide some built-in photo-editing tools, we think Instragram is still the superior service, offering not only more aesthetically pleasing filters, but also the luxury of choice, as not everyone necessarily wants to use Twitter for photos.
Both updates are currently available to download on the App Store and Google Play. Let us know what you think of them in the comments section below.
