Apple eyeing Waze buyout to improve mapping software?

Apple could acquire mapping app doyens Waze, industry chatter suggests, as the iPhone-maker bids to address the much-pilloried, much-publicised shortcomings of Apple Maps.

Named by a host of tech watchers as among the year’s most egregious tech fails, Apple Maps has been beset by a host of snafus, including missing towns, a catalogue of misspellings and threadbare detail compared with rival solutions Google Maps and Nokia Maps.

Today it seems Apple is considering tackling the problem by augmenting its team with Waze’s devs, whose social-flavoured smartphone mapping app has proved a particular hit among the iOS faithful.

The mooted deal is purported to value the company, whose crowdsourced maps’ accuracy is based on the fact they use data from moving vehicles rather than just check-ins, at between $400 million and $500 million.

Waze, which has refused to confirm or deny the story, already provides mapping data for Israel that’s used for Apple Maps.

The speculation follows reports from last year that Foursquare was an Apple takeover target.
