Apple’s iPhone outsells Samsung Galaxy smartphones by 88 million

Apple has sold some 88 million units more of the iPhone than Samsung’s flagship Galaxy smartphones, figures released in a research note to investors reveal.

According to Raymond James analyst Tavis McCourt, the cumulative global sales of the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and the iPhone 5 currently stand at 219 million, compared to 131 million units of the Samsung Galaxy S and Note ranges.

Samsung vs Apple in armour

McCourt commented: "Although undoubtedly Samsung's Galaxy line-up has been tremendously successful, given the sudden negative sentiment related to iPhone, we thought it would be interesting to compare Galaxy sales vs. iPhone sales over the last two and a half years.”

Samsung recently announced that it has shipped over 100 million units of its flagship Galaxy phones and is fast building on that landmark with average daily sales of 190,000 units of the Galaxy S3.

However, McCourt noted that the iPhone has actually gained ground on Sammy’s kits over the course of last year, which flies in the face of chatter that iPhones’ popularity has substantially waned in recent months.

Apple has reportedly almost halved its order for iPhone 5 screens for the first quarter, which some analysts have attributed to slowing demand. Although it might just as well be the case that the iMaker is readying new iPhone for launch in summer and possibly even a cheaper, smaller model.
