Apple could already be conducting trials of the next iPhone and the software that will power it, reports suggest, just four months after its most recent smartphone dropped.

According to developers cited by the Next Web, an identifier for a new smartphone seemingly dubbed the ‘iPhone6,1’ has shown-up sporadically on app usage logs.

These appearances for the as-yet-unconfirmed kit purportedly stem from the Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California, where Apple normally tests its products extensively with some of the App Store’s most popular titles before releasing devices into the wild.

The references to the handset, which is likely to debut in September, come amid separate leaks that iOS 7, the next version of Apple’s operating system for mobile devices, is also being put through its paces.

It’s not yet known that the software will bring, but further enhancements to Siri and Apple Maps are certain to feature as the tech giant bids to address the problems that saw the Google Maps rival named among 2012’s ‘biggest fails’ by a host of technology sites.
