Android Jelly Bean hits HTC One X on Three

Three has begun rolling out Android 4.1.1 (AKA Jelly Bean) to the HTC One X, adding some smart new features to the Taiwanese phone-maker’s 2012 flagship phone.

The update, which arrives some six months after Google first lifted the lid on Jelly Bean and was announced through @threeuk on Twitter yesterday, is available now as an over-the-air download.

The delay in pushing out the software will be doubtless attributable to Three’s requirement to carry out tests on the platform bump to ensure it works with its proprietary services, as well as the rigours of getting Jelly Bean to play nice with HTC’s Sense Android custom skin.

At least now it’s here, the sheer breadth of features it adds means there are genuine reasons to celebrate. Not least among them the slew of performance enhancements Google calls Project Butter that promises to make the One X a much slicker bit of kit, as well as a revamped notifications bar and offline voice typing.

HTC One X owners can also look forward to the Siri-challenging Google Now service that combines voice commands with a card-based, location-sensitive intelligent search function to serve up germane – and occasionally pretty helpful - information.

Three advises anyone about to update their One X to ensure their battery is fully charged and ensure they’ve backed up personal data, in case of mid-upgrade complications/glitches. But we know you knew to do that, anyway.
