Apple iOS Maps hiring drive hints at major improvements

Apple is clearing the way for a massive overhaul of its heavily lambasted mapping software, job ads posted by the phone-maker suggest.

This week, the California-based tech giant posted over ten situations-vacant advertisements to bolster staff numbers working on iOS Maps. Of these, nine are related to programming, with the remaining role involving navigation.

Clocked by the winningly named fansite Apple Bitch, the advertisements also reveal that Apple is targeting improvements to the service’s user interface, as well as how it dovetails with the similarly badly received Siri voice commands app.

Less seismic but still important enhancements we can look forward to involve the look and feel of 3D maps and how landmarks are labelled.

Signs of an internal drive to make iOS Maps a more viable challenger to long-established rivals Google Maps and Nokia Maps come after it emerged that Apple has held talks with location-based social network Foursquare with a view to sharing data for a more accurate service.

Although now much-improved, Apple Maps initially came in for caustic criticism for a slew of factual errors, such as including long-obsolete businesses but omitting historic landmarks and towns.
