BlackBerry 10 to support Android Jelly Bean apps soon

BlackBerry’s freshly launched BlackBerry 10 operating system will soon be able to run applications developed for Android Jelly Bean, chatter from the phone-maker’s European developers' conference suggests.

According to unknown attendees of BlackBerry Jam Europe, which kicked off in Amsterdam yesterday, BlackBerry is planning to update its Android runtime for BlackBerry 10 to ensure its OS is compatible with the latest titles on Google’s platform.

Currently, the sole BlackBerry 10 handset on sale – the BlackBerry Z10 - can sideload apps made for the three-year-old Gingerbread version of Android, which has since been superseded by the Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean iterations.

Although an ETA wasn’t given for Jelly Bean support on BlackBerry 10, the news will no doubt come as a boon to early adopters of the platform and provides a substantial boost to the 70,000+ apps already available on BlackBerry World.

We’ll be sure to bring you more as developments unfold in the days and weeks to come.
