iPad mini 2 screen resolution could trump iPad 4

The next iteration of the iPad mini will feature the crispest images of any Apple tablet so far, reports suggest.

According to Taiwanese supply-chain sources cited by BrightWire, the device tentatively being dubbed the iPad mini 2 will feature a pixel density of 324 pixels per inch (ppi).

That compares to a ppi of 264 offered by the Retina display that nestles within the tech giant’s latest standard-sized slate, the iPad 4.

As well as enabling Apple to indulge in its time-honoured touting of the ‘best iPad screen ever!’ when the slate is unveiled, the move also promises to be something of a boon for app developers.

That’s because bringing the low-end tablet’s screen’s specs more in line with its larger, costlier forebears will mean devs can target a single resolution, which ought to streamline the production process and ensure apps look as good as possible on a range of display sizes.

Chatter about a Retina display-equipped sequel to the iPad mini comes amid speculation that Apple could be ready to drop its next micro-tablet challenger as early as next month – just six months after the first edition was launched.
