Samsung Galaxy Note 2 price cuts hint at imminent Note 3 release

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is now up for grabs at knockdown prices in the US, sparking speculation that retailers and carriers are clearing stocks ahead of the imminent arrival of the next-generation edition of Samsung’s phablet phenom.

Amazon is currently offloading the handset-cum-tablet halfway house for $189.99 on a monthly contract. That equates to just £120 in crisp, non-sequentially numbered fivers - or less than half what you'd normally expect to pay.

And Amazon isn’t alone. Network giant Verizon has just halved the upfront charge that applies when contract customers sign up for a Note 2. The discount also applies when existing customers add another line to their family plan.

The moves from two the biggest players in the US mobile market is fuelling conjecture that the Note 3 is just around the corner and could even take a bow at Mobile World Congress this month along with its larger stablemate, the Note 8.0.

Along with a vast 6.3-inch screen, which is up from the Note 2’s already pretty substantial 5.5-inch display, the Note 3 is expected to feature a gym-honed eight-core Exynos 5 Octa processor on pixel-pushing duties and support for the S-Pen stylus that featured on its first two iterations.
