Samsung will lift the lid on the fourth-generation Galaxy S smartphone next month, ushering in a new front in its battle with smartphone rival Apple.
The due date for the phone, which was surely announced today as a PR spoiler while all eyes are on new devices revealed at Mobile World Congress, was all but confirmed after South Korean gadget-maker sent out press invites for a Samsung Unpacked event on March 14th.
Although there’s no mention of the Galaxy S4 by name, Samsung drops a heavy hint that’s exactly what’s in store for us by exhorting us to get ‘ready 4 the show’ and invites the gentlemen of the tech press to “come along and meet the next Galaxy”.
The shift of the venue for the S4 launch from London where the S3 and S2 were showcased is an acknowledgement of how fulsomely Samsung devices have been embraced by our US cousins and perhaps indicates a shift of marketing focus on Samsung’s part, as it bids to take the fight to Apple in its own backyard.
It’s likely that the handset will land on shop shelves towards the end of March or early April. Assuming Apple sticks to its new Q3 iPhone refresh cycle, that ought to give the S4 an extensive window in which to hoover up tech-site column inches and sales.
Expected to feature more in the way of S3-style, novel user-interface tweaks, such as eye motion-sensitive controls and touch-free gesture recognition the S4’s big selling points are also rumoured to take in wireless charging, a larger, five-inch Super AMOLED full HD screen and an octa-core processor.
