Apple's Schiller takes aim at Samsung Galaxy S4 & Android fragmentation

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is selling customers short with superannuated software, one of Apple’s top brass has implied, on the eve of the handset's grand unveiling later today.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Apple Senior Vice President Phil Schiller criticised Samsung for shipping with a version of Android that is “nearly a year old”, with the result that “customers will have to wait to get an update”.

The inclusion of what we’re assuming Schiller regards as dated software on the brand new handset came amid a series of brickbats from Schiller at the rival Android operating system and what he perceives as fatal flaws with fragmentation.

He said: "With their own data, only 16 per cent of Android users are on year-old version of the operating system.

“More than 50 per cent are still on software that is two years old. A really big difference."

His remarks come at a time when Google’s decision to issue new versions of Android less frequently had seemed to ameliorate the fragmentation problem which means customers get radically different user experiences depending on the brand or age of Android phones they opt for.

And in a final potshot, Apple’s Senior Veep also took aim at the sheer volume of Android devices hitting the market and implied this business model resulted in rush-released handsets that were unloved by their owners.

"At Apple we know that it's not just enough to have products pumped out in large numbers," he said.

"You have to love and use them. There is a lot of data showing a big disparity there."
