Samsung Galaxy Note 3 flexible, unbreakable screen rumours resurface

The third-edition of the Samsung Galaxy Note could pack a flexible screen, reports suggest, as the phone-maker bids to differentiate its phablet in a sea of me-too devices.

Industry sources cited by Korean site Asiae claim that the Note 3 will be the first Samsung device to feature the ‘unbreakable’ bendy screen technology the phone-maker showcased back in January at the CES 2013 tech expo.

The screen will purportedly come in at 5.9-inches and not 6.3-inches, as a smattering of earlier reports would have us believe. That’s still pretty large even by phablet standards, though.

According to the same report, the half-tablet, half-smartphone kit will debut at the annual IFA gadget show in Berlin in September – information that tallies with earlier leaks from Samsung’s supply chain suggesting it will land along with new additions to the Tab range of tablets.

Predictions that 2013 will finally see Samsung’s flexible tech go from drawing board and tech-fan fancy to reality have been rife for months now.

Some industry-watchers expected a bendy display to be on board the Samsung Galaxy S4, which debuted earlier this month with a traditional Super AMOLED HD screen.

For what it’s worth, we’re not sure Samsung would risk a flexible screen, which might prove a real turn-off for mass-market smartphone buyer, in a device as high-profile as the Note 3. Far more likely is that it will debut the tech on a new category of handset to test the water.
