September will be marked by a one-two punch of new products from Samsung, it has emerged, as the Android platform leader bids for a sizeable tranche of the lucrative Christmas gadget market.
According to Patently Apple, Samsung will use the month’s IFA tech expo to unveil its first-ever foray into wearable technology in the form of its much-rumoured GEAR smartwatch.
The event in Berlin is also expected to see the arrival of the third-generation of Samsung's Galaxy Note phablet, giving the South Korean company two strong products in its pipeline as it attempts to once again take the fight to Apple.
With the so-called iWatch not likely to appear until next year, Samsung would benefit from a significant first-mover advantage over the Cupertino-based tech giant.
Young Hee, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile division, confirmed Samsung’s long-standing interest in smartwatches earlier this year.
He said: “We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them.”
Like Sony’s recently showcased SmartWatch 2, the iWatch and Samsung GEAR smartwatches are unlikely to offer the ability to make and take calls.
Rather they will be marketed as accessories to be paired with users’ smartphones to give them remote access to their handsets’ key features.
