Google Play downloads pass iOS App Store for first time

Downloads from Google’s Play Store exceeded those from Apple’s App Store for the first time in the second quarter of 2013, it has been revealed.

Stats from App Annie show that users of the Big G’s service snagged 10% more apps during the period than punters using Apple’s platform.

However, while that headline figure might have some tech-watchers writing off Apple’s effort, Cupertino makes 2.3 times more cash from its app emporium.

That once again shows that while free downloads are hugely popular on each service, iPhone and iPad owners are more willing to stump up for smartphone add-ons.

On both services, games remain by the far the most popular kind of apps. It appears that while many developers want you to snag their latest productivity tool, most smartphone owners just want to kick back and play.
