The current-gen iPhone took a haircut on O2 today, in a further sign that the next model from the House of Jobs will be along imminently.

As part of the carrier’s periodic 'flash sales', O2 has cut the upfront fee payable from £209.99 to £49.99 when customers sign up for the 32GB model on a £37 per month contract.

Allowances are 1GB of data per month, plus unlimited minutes and texts.

For that outlay, you’re bagging a handset that packs a four-inch Retina display, an A6 processor and an eight-megapixel iSight camera. Oh, and it supports 4G too, so you’re at liberty to upgrade to O2’s faster service when it launches on August 29th.

The iPhone 5 price reduction comes as the eyes of tech scribes and bloggers all turn Cupertino-wards ahead of the release of a new handset, or possibly handsets, in September.

Apple’s refreshed iPhone, which may be called the iPhone 5S or the iPhone 6, is expected to feature more brawn and storage than its predecessor, but retain a similar design.

Its running mate, the much-leaked low-cost iPhone 5C will purportedly see Apple break with form to adopt a plastic shell in place of the premium materials that have become iPhones’ calling card.

Both phones are set to include fingerprint scanning tech in the home button to improve their security credentials.
