O2 4G pre-registration goes live, discount for upgrading iPhone 5 customers

O2 has launched a pre-registration scheme for would-be 4G smartphone buyers, as the clock ticks on the arrival of the carrier’s super-fast network on August 29th.

The network’s pre-sale page is live now, enabling early adopters to sign up for email or text updates about handset availability, as well as locations where the service is available.

O2 has also announced an offer for iPhone 5 owners who bought the handset between September and March 31st, which enables them to upgrade to any 4G handset for a reduced rate.

Under the terms of the deal, O2 will also allow iPhone 5 owners who bought during this period to upgrade at any time and will waive 25% of their remaining line rental.

And it pledges to fast-track the process too and will offer customers up to £295 for their iPhone 5 when they use O2’s Recycle trade-in scheme.

Chief executive Ronan Dunne confirmed that O2’s 4G service would not work with the iPhone 5 earlier this year because it is not compatible with the frequencies the network uses.

The service will initially be available in London, Leeds and Bradford. By the end of the year, O2 plans to offer 4G in 13 cities. These are: London, Birmingham, Leeds, Bradford, Newcastle, Glasgow, Liverpool, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry, Sheffield, Manchester and Edinburgh.
