Samsung Galaxy Gear: get used to that name because that’s almost certainly what Sammy is going to call its much-anticipated smartwatch.
After the name was revealed in a Korean news report over the weekend, eagle-eyed tech watchers in the Netherlands have found a trademark filing that appears to confirm the title of the iWatch-bashing device.
The filing, made in the US, says Samsung wants to use the Galaxy Gear name for “wearable digital electronic devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle capable of providing access to the Internet and for sending and receiving phone calls, electronic mails and messages”.
The application was made in late July. Samsung is believed to be priming the smartwatch for launch at a special event on September 4th, before giving it pride of place on its stand at the annual IFA tech show in Berlin.
Samsung will be looking to take on Sony’s recently revealed Smart Watch 2, as well as Apple’s unannounced, but much-hyped iWatch.
