Apple’s new flagship phone took a bow this evening, amid all the bells, whistles and hullabaloo that have come to characterise iPhone launches.
Showcased alongside the low-cost iPhone 5C, the iPhone 5S’s major USP is the incorporation of biometric technology in a redesigned home button fashioned from laser-cut sapphire crystal.
This reads users’ fingerprint and sub-epidermal skin layers to add a fresh layer of security for unlocking phones. The tech can also be used for making iTunes purchases, eliminating the need to laboriously tap in your password each and every time.
The iPhone 5S, which the shy, retiring marketing men at Apple dubbed the “most forward-thinking iPhone ever", is also home to a revamped iSight camera with a larger f/2.2 aperture and a 15% larger active sensor area.
Two LED flashes are also on board for better low-light snapping, as is auto-image stabilisation technology and HD video recording at 720p at 120 fps.
Alongside a brawnier A7 processor and in response to the surge in popularity for fitness apps, Apple has also fitted the phone with a new M7 chip that continuously measures motion data. It's claimed this will clear the way for a new generation of sports applications.
Powered by the massively rethought iOS 7 operating system, the handset comes in 16GB, 32GB and a 64GB storage variants. These are priced $199, $299 and $399 respectively in the US when bought with a two-year contract.
The iPhone 5S and its low-cost stablemate are both landing on pre-order on September 13th and will officially go on sale on September 20th.
