New expose reveals BlackBerry failings

A probe by Canada’s Globe and Mail newspaper has revealed major rifts at the top of beleagured phone-maker BlackBerry.

The report comes a week after the company revealed it was being sold in a multi-billion dollar deal, following massive staff cuts and huge losses.

Former co-CEO Jim Balsillie apparently severed ties with BlackBerry because of new CEO Thorsten Heins’ refusal to back his plans to focus on the BBM instant messagng service rather than hardware.

Balsillie had hoped to launch BBM as an SMS alternative for BlackBerry phones and other, non-BlackBerry devices, making the company a fortune in the process.

Instead, he quit when plans were shelved. BBM only recently launched on iOS and Android, months after originally mooted.

A row also erupted over the launch of the BlackBerry Z10.

Mike Lazaridis, also a one-time co-CEO, did not believe the launch of the touchscreen Z10 should precede the arrival of the keyboard-packing Q10, saying the former didn’t help BlackBerry stand out in the market.

The Z10’s woeful sales go some way to back up this assertion.

In a further sign of BlackBerry's mismanagement, the report also mentions that US network Verizon is believed to have asked BlackBerry to make a so-called 'iPhone killer' in the months after the Apple phone’s release.

When this didn’t happen, it turned to Google instead, in turn precipitating the rise of Android that has done so much to make BlackBerry smartphones seem superannuated.
