Twitter has revealed a new recommendations tool for its iPhone and Android apps, which will serve up notifications when a tweet receives heaps of attention from people in your network.
The aim is to prevent you missing out on important news or just an amusing missive, something easily down when scrolling through hours of tweets when you wake up or are away from your smartphone.
If a tweet is retweeted or favourited multiple times, you’ll get a nudge from Twitter telling you to check it out. This can of course be switched off if things get too intrusive and your phone starts buzzing every five minutes with new tweets.
The new feature is based on the service’s own @MagicRecs account, which served the same purpose, sending direct messages about key tweets to its followers. The account received stacks of critical adoration, hence today’s move.
If successful, this could prove a further nail in the coffin of RSS. Google killed off its Reader service because of social media serving the same function and now rivals are sure to be concerned.
