Android 4.4 KitKat trailed in video, app updates hint at imminent due date

Signs that Android 4.4 will drop imminently are coming thick and fast, as Google appears to clear the decks for the next major iteration of its smartphone operating system.

Android 4.4, aka KitKat, is expected to get its BIG REVEAL early next month alongside Google’s next own-branded phone, the Nexus 5. But as it stands, Google has yet to make any kind of official announcement to tech scribes or confirm that it’s planning a launch event.

In the meantime, though, the search giant is still drip-feeding us teasers to build up interest around the platform reswizzle.

The latest, which first appeared on Rowntrees’ Google+ page, shows the familiar Android mascot dallying with a magician friend and features the hopeful Twitter hashtag #magicbreak.

Whether the magic theme hints at new features that are in store for us is anyone’s guess. But right now we’re inclined to think Google and Rowntrees just think it’s cute.

Arguably more revealing, though, is that Google has updated all its proprietary apps (that’s everything from Analytics to Drive to Gmail) over the last two days or so.

This is being interpreted by some tech-watchers as a sure sign that the update is about to drop any time now. And given that these huge as-one updates have preceded major OS bumps in the past, it’s a pretty fair to assume they’re right.
