BBM for Android and iOS suffers new setbacks

Just days after BlackBerry made a successful second attempt at launching BBM on iOS and Android, new problems with the messaging service appear to have surfaced on both platforms.

Word is that BBM’s 4.2 rating on Google Play, garnered from more than 100,000 reviews, has been manipulated. Users are reporting that a number of testimonies use the same or similar language, with one even including a line about the review being ready to post onto Google Play itself.

With a number of fake BBM apps in Google Play, it could be that these have been mistakenly posted as reviews of the official service.

In a statement, BlackBerry said: “We have recently been made aware of a number of potentially fake five-star reviews of BBM for Android on Google Play. We do not approve of or condone such activities and are committed to working with Google to resolve this.”

To make things worse, Apple’s latest iOS 7 update seems to have killed BBM. The new version of iOS doesn’t support a particular Helvetica font which BBM requires, causing the app to crash when selecting a contact name.

BlackBerry revealed earlier this week that BBM for iOS and Android had been downloaded 10 million times.
