iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 event will be livestreamed

Apple apostles will be able to watch tonight’s iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 launch event live online, with the news that Apple has called time on its closed-doors policy to the general public. For tonight, anyway.

Blurb around the official page for the stream invites the iArmy to “watch streaming video from this special event and learn more about our exciting announcements” from 6pm UK time.

In recent years, Apple has restricted launch event for new products to an invitation-only audience of journalists. It will then typically make the showcase available to view via its website later the same evening.

Exactly what engendered the tech giant’s unexpected volte face isn’t yet known. It could simply be that Apple has bowed to demand from the public for a livestream.

Or it may be that that Tim Cook wants to run a more open company – one that’s less fixated on exerting control over (read: micromanaging) every aspect of every product.

Either way, that will surely become apparent in time. As, of course, will whatever it is that the iPad mini 2 and iPad 5 have in store for us.

If leaks are anything to by, though, this year will see the devices converge, with the iPad 5 taking on the curved back and smaller bezel of the iPad mini range.

Both devices are also set to pack eight-megapixel cameras and Touch ID fingerprint scanning tech and come in a choice of gold, graphite grey or white-silver.

According to Apple, if you want to livestream the press call on a Mac or iDevice, you'll "require Safari 4 or later on OS X v10.6 or later; Safari on iOS 4.2 or later". If you'd like to watch it on an Apple TV, you'll "require a second- or third-generation Apple TV with software 5.0.2 or later".
