Google Nexus 4: Android 4.4 KitKat update is go

Google has started rolling out the latest version of Android to the Nexus 4, bringing the former-flagship phone in line with its just-released sequel.

A number of Nexus 4 owners on forums are reporting that Android 4.4, aka KitKat, is available to download now as an over-the-air update.

Features it adds include a design overhaul that’s not a million miles from iOS 7 if you squint, with a new app launcher, more prominence for Google Now and the usual suite of non-specific performance optimisations.

Google stated: “This software update will upgrade your Nexus 4 to Android 4.4, KitKat, which adds a number of new features and improves performance.

“Never miss a message with Hangouts, which can now bring all of your SMS and MMS messages alongside your other conversations and video calls.”

The ‘vanilla Android’ handset’s lack of bloatware, fripperies and adornments make it much easier to update than handsets manufactured by third-party manufacturing partners. It's for this reason that Google own-branded Nexus 4 is getting Android 4.4 so soon after it was unveiled.

Android 4.4 is free to download and will take up 240MB of space on your smartphone. As ever, it’s a good idea to use Wi-Fi for the update to save on your monthly 3G allowance.
