Google Nexus 5 price marked up 45% at Carphone Warehouse

Would-be Nexus 5 owners looking to pick up the handset from Carphone Warehouse could be in for a bit of rude awakening, after it emerged that the retailer appears to have hiked the asking price by a whopping 45%.

Our sister site Omio spotted that the retail giant’s website is hawking the latest in the Nexus range in its 16GB flavour for £429 when bought SIM-free and off-contract.

That compares with a price of £295 when the handset, the major USP of which is that it offers top-end specs for a mid-range price, is bought outright from the Google Play store.

Interestingly, or perplexingly depending on your take, Carphone initially offered the Nexus 5 for a price almost exactly in line with Google Play’s.

The site is also still selling the Nexus for monthly contract prices that are unchanged from those initially announced. That means you can still pick one up for £21 per month, which Carphone touted as the UK’s cheapest contracts.

With that mind, it’s possible that the £429 price could be human error. That’s certainly what Omio’s newshound Rob Kerr, who is chasing an explanation from Carphone, surmises anyway.

Either way, keep ‘em peeled here, where we’ll let you know what he’s able to find out.
