Android Jelly Bean surges as KitKat makes small gains

The numbers of Android phones and tablets running Jelly Bean rose almost 5% to 59.1% last month, figures reveal.

That jump was down to a swathe of manufacturers finally making the year-old OS available on a slew of devices over the past few months.

The newer KitKat version of Google OS rose from 1.1% to 1.4%, hampered largely by only being available of Nexus devices and Motorola phones.

HTC and Samsung are due to roll out KitKat to their flagship handsets over the next couple of months, meaning we should see a bump in users in February and March.

Over 60% are now using a version of Android 4.x, which shows fragmentation of the Google platform appears to be under control.

The challenge will come when Google releases Android 5.0 later in 2014: Only then will we know whether manufacturers and users will be willing to upgrade quickly to a wholly new edition, bringing an end to the sometimes parlous state of Google’s OS.
